More than 100 journalists have been killed by Israeli attacks since October 7. Sumayya Wushah, is one of Gaza’s Fearless 11 Year Old Girl Reporter, and she says she is “not afraid” to work from the war-torn Strip.
People who know that writers are being targeted are worried about me when I first started. As she tells Al Jazeera, “But when they saw that I was determined to work in journalism, they agreed.”
An experienced reporter for Al Jazeera named Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli shooters in Jenin. Wushah says Abu Akleh moved her to tell Palestinian stories.
“I always wanted to be a reporter and show the world how good I was, even before the war.” Shireen Abu Akleh does a lot of good things. We pray that God will forgive her. Wushah said, “I wanted to show the world what I could do like she did.”
I swear to God before I leave the house and tell my parents I’ll be back. They said, “I don’t know if they will go after me on my way, when I get back, or even when I’m filming.”
In a world fraught with injustice and despair, Sumayya Wushah stands as a beacon of hope and resilience, reminding us all of the power of one individual to make a difference. Her courage in the face of adversity, her unwavering commitment to truth, and her refusal to be silenced serve as an inspiration to us all. As we marvel at her remarkable journey, let us also take heed of her message: that fear may lurk in the shadows, but courage will always shine brightest in the face of darkness.
