The Elden Ring dlc, Shadow of the Erdtree has finally been fully shown off with a beautiful video that shows off the Land of Shadow. It will be out in June. This land is where the expansion takes place and has its own map. Players of Tarnished will follow Miquella’s path to find out why he came to this strange land. This is the first (and probably only) update for Elden Ring. It looks like it’s pretty big, with a lot of different rooms and open places to explore. There will, of course, also be some horrible bosses waiting in those places. Let’s go over everything we know about the Shadow of the Erdtree update and the DLC Elden Ring.

Shadow of the Erdtree is mostly about Miquella, who is Marika’s son and Malenia’s brother and the Goddess of Rot, and what he’s been doing in the Land of Shadow. He’s an important character in the story of Elden Ring, but he never really shows up in the game. He only shows up in a small, extra part of the game and a lot of item details.
In case you need to quickly review, the views of the Golden Order say that Miquella will always have the body of a child. He spent many years looking for ways to fix his and Malenia’s curses. He quit the Order and made the Haligtree to compete with the Erdtree, but it didn’t work. Then he made a cage for himself in the Haligtree, but his half-brother Mohg, Lord of Blood, took it away. Mohg wanted to awaken Miquella, make her a real god, and make her his partner. But the Tarnished player can kill Mohg before any of that happens, putting Miquella in a cocoon-like coma.
Now in Shadow of the Erdtree, we know that Miquella has gone to the Land of Shadow, but we don’t know why. It’s up to the player to find her and travel through this new land with her. In fact, the above art shows Miquella making that trip, as many fans thought.
In the trailer’s introduction, it says, “In the Land of Shadow, Miquella awaits the return of his promised Lord…” This gives us a clue about why Miquella is there. The Shadow Land. A spot that the Erdtree blocks out. Where the goddess Marika walked for the first time. A land that was cleaned up in a fight that no one saw coming. Messmer’s light set it on fire. This is the place where Miquella went. Giving up his body, his strength, and his family history. Everything Golden. I’m not sure who Miquella’s “promised Lord” could be—it could be you, the player—but it’s clear that he’s following in his mother Marika’s footsteps. From what I can tell, Marika has been to the Land of Shadow before she got to the Lands Between. We also don’t know what she did there, but it sounds like a terrible fight happened where a figure named Messmer (more on him below) burned the land.
Along with Miquella following Marika, his trip to the Land of Shadow seems to be part of a change (hence the cocoon), which lets him leave his body in the Lands Between and give up his family and the Golden Order for good. But for what reason is still a puzzle, and one that will probably be solved as Shadow of the Erdtree goes on.
Head of Games, Hidetaka Miyazaki, told IGN that George R.R. Martin hasn’t written any new material for Shadow of the Erdtree, but that the story of the expansion is still based on the lore he wrote in the first book. “…we used parts of that mythos to make the base game and Elden Ring, but only one part.” “We used a part of the story that he wrote for Elden Ring to build the world we wanted to see, and the Shadow of the Erdtree is another part of that original mythos that inspired us to write the story for this DLC,” Miyazaki says.
Where is the Setting of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?
As was already said, Shadow of the Erdtree takes players to the Land of Shadow, which is in the same space as the Lands Between in Elden Ring but is “physically disconnected,” as Miyazaki told IGN. This shows up as a new area in the game that is at least as big as Limgrave. It’s not as big as the Lands Between, but it’s still pretty big.
Miyazaki also says that the Land of Shadow will have a mix of open fields and classic, winding caves of different sizes, just like the settings in the main game. He also told Eurogamer that the devs have been trying out different ways to use the empty places between the fields and dungeons to make the game more interesting and “bring these types of layout together a little more seamlessly.”
What if it’s a whole new map? How do we get there? As Miyazaki said in the IGN interview, it will take a “warp of sorts” to get there, with Miquella’s dead arm in Mohg’s Palace as the entrance. Once you get there, you’ll see some beautiful places full of debris and old, big buildings, just like in the base game.
The main center of the Land of Shadow is, of course, the Shadow of the Erdtree. From what I understand of Miyazaki’s short answer, this is not a shadow of the Erdtree in the Lands Between that we all knew and loved and then burned down. Instead, it’s its own thing, called the Shadow of the Erdtree. It covers the land and might have its own power, like the Erdtree’s’ grace.
Gameplay and Features of Elden Ring DLC: Shadow of the Erdtree:
As everyone already knows, Shadow of the Erdtree will be hard, just like the rest of Elden Ring. Even though it’s not as nasty as some of FromSoftware’s other DLC for Blood borne and the Dark Souls series. You can choose from a huge number of builds in Elden Ring, so there should be many ways to beat every enemy and boss. In Shadow of the Erdtree, you’ll have even more choices.
For all the new guns that are being added, Eurogamer tells us that there will be eight new types of weapons. Shadow of the Erdtree looks like it will have a lot of new swords, throwing knives, armor, weapon skills, and silly spells and incantations based on the video. There’s even a flying kick that spins, a crossbow that fires quickly, and a pot of fire that you can throw. They can also use the Crucible Knight move, which makes two wings appear.
In Shadow of the Erdtree, you can use all of this to fight more than 10 bosses. Some of these bosses are about as hard or exciting as Malenia. One possible boss could be a huge fire pot that shows up quickly in the trailer. According to Miyazaki, it was a “really gruesome weapon” used in a war in the Land of Shadow. There’s also a huge hippopotamus-porcupine creature, a lion-man who shoots smoke and lightning, and Messmer the Impaler.
The Identity of Messmer the Impaler in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?
A new character called Messmer the Impaler is coming to Elden Ring with Shadow of the Erdtree. He is very angry. Few details are known about him, but he seems to be the main bad guy the players will face. He likes fire and is probably very good at impaling people.
For example, the trailer says that the Land of Shadow was “set ablaze by Messmer’s flame” during a huge fight. Also, Marika got to the Land of Shadow, but it’s not clear if she got there before or after Messmer’s destruction. If Messmer was her friend, she could even be to blame for it.
In fact, in the video, a character says, “Mother, wouldst thou truly Lordship sanction one so lacking in light?” I think the “one so bereft of light” is Messmer since this is said when he first shows up on screen. To me, that sounds like Miquella talking. He wants to know why Marika would make a bad person like Messmer a Lord.
At the end of the video, another voice says, “Those who have lost the Grace of Gold will all die.” As Messmer’s flame wraps around them.” It’s possible that Messmer is talking, but either way, it’s clear that Messmer wants to burn down people who have lost the Grace of Gold, which means Miquella. Or maybe Messmer is some kind of fire killer that Marika used to kill Golden Order rebels. He has red hair and a name that starts with M, so he might even be Malenia and Miquella’s secret brother. If he was turned away from the Land of Shadow, it means that Messmer wants to kill Miquella for betraying him.
The orange glow in Messmer’s eyes makes me think of the Frenzied Flame, but his deep red clothes and flames make me think more of the Fire Prelates and enemies near the Forge of the Giants. We know that Marika has fought the Fire Giants before, so it’s possible that Messmer was given that power at some point.
I have no idea what the red, flying snake that wraps around him is. Perhaps a nice pet!
The Future Elden Ring DLC:
As Miyazaki told IGN, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is the only planned add-on for the game, and there are no plans for a sequel to Elden Ring at this time. His words “there could well be something in the future” make it clear that there isn’t anything planned right now. What does that also mean? It means that after the expansion comes out, there probably won’t be any major changes to Elden Ring on the same level as the free Elden Ring Colosseum update in December 2022.
